Author’s note: We had a big,
cold winter snow in Nashville
yesterday. About six inches
deep, and I thought of the
Lenten Rose I had seen
blooming a few day before
on a much warmer day.

Author’s note: I have been
working on this haiku all
week while being housebound
by heavy snows in the Central
Basin of the Highlands of
Middle Tennessee. I wrote the
haiku before witnessing the
actual event of a cardinal
appearing in the underbrush
on a freezing sunny snowy winter
day when I took this photo.
Matching my poetry with art
and photos is a major part of my
creative process.

Author’s note: Upon awakening
this morning early, after 6 inches
of snow yesterday, my front door
was frozen shut, and as the dawn
arrived the sky offered a dazzling
display of soft colors in the frozen
white silence surrounding me.

Author’s note: A familiar glow
from outside woke me last night
where upon looking out, I was
greeted by several inches of snow
on the ground. For those of us making
our homes here in middle Tennessee,
we have experienced wildly
varying weather over the last week
from record heat in the 70’s, to tornado
warnings and storms, and now snow
with temperatures in the 20’s. The
snow and cold are beautiful!

haiku: moon light on the road to Bethlehem

haiku: moon light on
the road to Bethlehem

oh moon of winter
hovers in misty treetops
lighting up the way

taken this morning

Author’s note: The moon was

lovely in the misty barren tree
limbs this morning outside my
abode. Being Advent I was
reminded that Mary and Joseph
would have been traveling on
the way to Bethlehem for the tax
census demanded by the Roman
occupation at that time. Mary fully
pregnant, on a grueling, dangerous
trip from Nazareth with only
moonlight to light the way at night.
Another example of the Empire’s
dominance and oppression over the
Citizens of Judea and their prayers
for the fulfillment of a Messiah to
liberate them.
