Author’s note: I wish to thank
my English friends,
Emma Hepburn and Rosie Dowbekin,
for their love of the beautiful
streams in England, which
inspired me to write this tanka
poem. I am forever grateful
for your inspiration.

a dusting of snow
covers the earth, winter’s pall,
comes the killing frost

winter sun returns
ice crystals twinkle like stars
evergreens drip, drip, drip, drip, drip

chilly winter day
the sun in a cloudless sky
warms stiff faces
mindfully walking the creek
flowing loudly and rapid
from the snow and rain
it’s cold waters finding
their way telling us
all we need to know
spying the chickadee
in the cattail
of the wet bog
walking the muddy trail,
crisscrossed in shadow,
covered in winter’s detritus
gratitude filling us
as we travel back home
the sun over our shoulder

haiku: return of the winter sun
fair and cold today
sun lighting a cloudless sky
heart and hearth brighten
